Project Overview

Two Asbestos Structures Cleared in One Day

Crawley was developed as a new town in the late 1940s and 1950s, and a significant proportion of its housing stock dates from this period. Post-war construction in Crawley made extensive use of asbestos cement for garages, sheds, and outbuildings — it was the standard specification for ancillary structures throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Many of these structures remain in place today, often in deteriorating condition.

Combining the garage roof and shed removal into a single visit is the most cost-effective approach when both structures need to be dealt with. The mobilisation cost — transport, PPE, waste vehicle — is the same whether we remove one structure or two. Homeowners with multiple asbestos structures should always request a combined quote.

This job was completed in a single day. The garden renovation commenced the following week as planned, with no delays from the asbestos removal programme.

Cracked Asbestos Cement — When to Act Immediately

Asbestos cement in good condition presents a low risk if left undisturbed. However, cracked, broken, or heavily weathered asbestos cement is a different matter — surface degradation exposes fibres that can be released by wind, rain, or vibration. If you can see cracks, crazing, or surface erosion on an asbestos cement structure, it should be assessed by a licensed contractor and removed if the condition is deteriorating. Do not attempt to seal or paint over cracked asbestos cement without professional advice.

Project Timeline

How the Removal Was Carried Out

01

Initial Enquiry & Combined Scope Assessment

The homeowner in Crawley had recently moved into a post-war semi-detached property and was planning a full garden renovation. The property had both an attached single garage with an asbestos cement roof and a large asbestos cement garden shed at the rear. The homeowner wanted both structures dealt with in a single visit to minimise disruption and cost. Our surveyor attended to confirm both ACM types and assess the scope — the garage roof was in reasonable condition, but the shed had several cracked panels indicating weathering. Both were confirmed as asbestos cement.

02

Garage Roof Removal

The garage roof was tackled first. The corrugated asbestos cement sheets were wetted using a low-pressure sprayer before any fixings were disturbed. Sheets were removed whole wherever possible — the ridge sheets required careful hand-breaking with continued wet suppression. The garage frame was inspected after removal: the timber purlins were in good condition and suitable for re-roofing. The homeowner had already arranged for a local roofing contractor to fit a replacement corrugated metal roof the following week.

03

Shed Dismantling

The shed was dismantled panel by panel, starting with the roof. The cracked panels required particular care — weathered asbestos cement is more friable than intact material, and wet suppression was applied continuously throughout. The shed base was a concrete slab; it was inspected and confirmed ACM-free. All panels were double-wrapped in UN-approved polythene and sealed with asbestos warning tape immediately after removal.

Site Clearance & Documentation

Once both structures were cleared, the site was swept and all debris collected. The garden was left clear and ready for the landscaping contractor. The homeowner received the full documentation pack the same day: consignment note, HSE licence copy, and clearance certificate. The garden renovation commenced the following week as planned.
